IPAM, DDI and network glossary

A concise glossary for the main terms used across IP addressing, DNS, DHCP and CMDB contexts.

IPAM

IP Address Management: the practice of documenting, allocating and auditing IP addresses and subnets.

DDI

A common acronym for DNS, DHCP and IPAM. teemIP focuses on IPAM and DDI documentation rather than replacing DNS/DHCP servers.

CMDB

Configuration Management Database: the repository used to describe IT assets, services and relationships.

Subnet

A subdivision of an IP block, often expressed in CIDR notation such as 10.0.1.0/24.

CIDR

Classless Inter-Domain Routing: the notation used to describe IP prefixes and subnet sizes.

IPv6

The 128-bit version of the Internet Protocol, designed for very large address spaces.

DNS

Domain Name System: the service that maps names to IP addresses and other records.

DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol: the service that assigns network parameters to clients.

CI

Configuration Item: an asset or component managed in a CMDB.

Audit trail

A history of changes used to track responsibility, context and operational decisions.
